Allegheny Contract Flooring is one of the largest commercial flooring companies in Boston. A family company in the business for over 60 years, Allegheny is widely respected as a leader in quality and service. Recently, the company began to recognize the need for revolutionary change in the marketplace. After generations of tremendous waste, Allegheny had seen enough. It started with a simple concept: stop sending carpet to the landfill. Today, Allegheny recycles nearly all the material they remove from a site. In an effort to improve their environmental performance, Allegheny contracted NEKinfo to evaluate the "green" practices of the carpet industry. We spent a full month locating reliable data to document the environmental and sustainable products and policies of the carpet mills. We used a comprehensive cradle-to-cradle approach in our life-cycle assessment of commercial flooring alternatives. We produced a multi--media presentation and an accompanying CD with a complete bibliography of sources and PDF documents organized by theme. Allegheny's CEO will use this material to provide consultation to the top architectural and design firms in Boston.
